Daily fishing report
By DAVE ZALEWSKI
Published October 26, 2006
What's hot: Spanish mackerel, kingfish, bonita and cobia seemed to sense the arrival of the cold front Monday and fed heavily in anticipation of rough seas and cloudy water. Gulf waters have dipped into the 72- to 78-degree range, which brings the southward migration of the pelagic and triggers bottom fish to feed heavily in anticipation of winter. Tactics: Trolling spoons and plugs behind Nos. 1, 2 and 3 planers at 6 knots allows you to cover more area and locate fish. Troll over areas where baitfish concentrate: hard bottom, artificial reefs, wrecks, buoys and the edges of the shipping channel. Running offshore and trolling along crab trap buoys is a good place to start. Tackle: Conventional tackle should be employed when pulling planers because their drag systems are sturdier. Twenty-five to 30 feet of 40- or 50-pound test leader must be between the planer and spoon or plug. A ball bearing snap swivel at the rear of the planer and a ball bearing swivel at the spoon prevents line twist.
