Museum of Art scales back its plans

TAMPA Two years ago, the Tampa Museum of Art had plans for a 150,000-square-foot building designed by renowned architect Rafael Vinoly and a $71-million budget including about $8.8-million in architectural fees. Documents released by the museum Wednesday reveal more modest plans: A $28-million budget with about $3-million going to an architect for design of a 60,000-square-foot building and plans for an expansion that would double the size of the facility. Museum leaders say they hope to select an architect by the end of the year and open the new museum by the end of 2008. Eckerd president gets 5 more years Eckerd College's board of trustees has extended its contract with president Donald R. Eastman III for another five years. Eastman became Eckerd's fourth president in July 2001. His first priority was to re-establish financial integrity at the school, where $19.5-million of the school's $34-million endowment fund was transferred improperly. Tarpon Springs Church on the Bayou celebrates 120 years Tarpon Springs is the oldest city in Pinellas County, but on Friday a church that is a year older than the city itself will celebrate a milestone anniversary. The Church on the Bayou Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) on Whitcomb Boulevard, known throughout the area for the immense white cross painted on its roof, is turning 120 years old. The anniversary program, called "So Great a Cloud of Witnesses," starts at 6 p.m. Friday with a dinner and historical presentations.
