TAMPA- The South Florida men's soccer team defeated Seton Hall 5-1 during the first round of the Big East Championships at the USF Soccer Stadium on Wednesday.

Helped by the return of some key offensive players, the Bulls (9-5-4, 4-3-4) scored on their first three shots.

"It was good to see players like Hunter (West) and Rigo (Rodrigo Hidalgo ) return," coach George Kiefer said. "I was pleased. We seem to be getting closer to what this team is capable of doing offensively. I thought we played extremely well and as we continue to have guys return, I look forward to keeping this momentum going."

Two goals by Hidalgo highlighted the Bulls' strong offensive outing. Goals by West, Kris Raad and Anthony D'Oyley Jr. rounded out the scoring.

Volleyball: Eckerd wins

ST. PETERSBURG - As a slim but swift 6-footer, Eckerd sophomore Keisha Carter might not be your average middle blocker.

But Carter has proved she can pack some punch.

Carter's .722 hit percentage helped lift the Tritons to a 3-0 win over Saint Leo (30-24, 30-27, 30-23).

The Tritons (19-10, 6-6 Sunshine State Conference) have won seven of their past eight matches and are ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II South Region.

With two weeks left in the regular season, Eckerd is on pace for its first region playoff appearance in program history. The top eight teams advance.

"We have all our pieces working well together," coach Courtney Draper said.

"It's been a complete team effort."

Saint Leo (19-8, 6-6 SSC) was led by sophomore outside hitter Audrey Starkebaum, who had a team-high 15 kills.

UF STREAK AT 11: Kisya Killings-worth had a match-high 21 kills as the Gators beat host Auburn 3-1 (30-17, 30-22, 29-31, 30-27) for their 11th consecutive victory. Florida (19-2, 12-1 SEC) have won 25 straight against the Tigers.

Basketball

COLORADO: Coach Ricardo Patton is through waiting for a contract extension. "I am announcing that this is my last year as head coach," he said. "I will neither seek nor accept an extension of my contract." Patton (177-140 in 10 years at Colorado), whose deal expires on July 1, 2007, added: "Our players need to focus on adjusting to the rigor of academics at CU and the level of competition in the Big 12 without being distracted by speculation regarding my contract." Athletic director Mike Bohn said the announcement blind-sided him.

KANSAS STATE: Former Ohio high school star Bill Walker has been admitted, the school said. Walker teamed with O.J. Mayo to win consecutive Division III state championships at North College Hill High in Cincinnati, where he is now a senior but has been ruled ineligible. He has close ties with Kansas State coach Bob Huggins, the former Cincinnati coach who took over the Wildcats program in March. Pat Bosco, associate vice president/dean of student life at Kansas State, said Walker was admitted about two weeks ago. Walker, 6 feet 6, averaged 21.7 points and 10.1 rebounds last season and was considered one of the top players in the country. The Ohio High School Athletic Association ruled Walker ineligible in August, saying he had completed the maximum eight semesters of eligibility.
