Bondi tries to hang on to Katrina dog by a toenail

Pam Bondi says her St. Bernard, Noah, is not Master Tank, the dog that was displaced in Hurricane Katrina. Bondi adopted the dog in October 2005.

ST. PETERSBURG - The St. Bernard that Pam Bondi adopted last year is not the same dog that a Louisiana couple lost after Hurricane Katrina, Pam Bondi's attorney said Friday.

And she said the dog has the toenail to prove it.

"Everyone assumed that it was the same dog from the outset," attorney Camille Godwin said. "But the toenail is very convincing."

Bondi, a Hillsborough County assistant state attorney, adopted the dog she has named Noah from the Humane Society of Pinellas, which took in dogs displaced by Katrina last year.

Steven and Dorreen Couture of St. Bernard Parish, La., have gone to court in an attempt to reclaim the dog they know as Master Tank. He is one of two dogs they lost in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

During a court hearing Friday, Bondi's attorneys focused on one of the dog's toenails as a key difference between the animal that Bondi has and the one the Coutures lost.

The Sept. 18, 2005, paperwork from the makeshift shelter where Master Tank was taken indicated that a "ingrown rear toenail" had been removed. Godwin has sworn statements that say the dog that Bondi adopted has all his nails.

Murray Silverstein, the St. Petersburg attorney representing the Coutures, said that Bondi and her attorney are wrong. On the paper, one line says the nail was clipped, while another line says it was removed.

"No, the toenail was not taken out," Silverstein said. "The intake says it was clipped, not taken out. Now we have this toenail as a basis of an identity dispute."

Bondi, the Coutures, and Rhonda Rineker of Dunedin, who adopted the second dog, appeared before Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Court Judge Henry J. Andringa Friday to determine who should have the dogs while he decides their fate.

The dogs were rescued by the Humane Society of Pinellas in September 2005 from St. Bernard Parish, after Hurricane Katrina.

A short time later, Bondi and Rineker adopted the dogs. Bondi adopted the St. Bernard on Oct. 15, 2005, and changed his name from Master Tank to Noah. Rineker adopted the shepherd-mix on Oct. 28 and changed her name from Nila to Gracie.

On Friday, the Coutures said finding their dogs was a step toward pulling their lives back together. When they finally tracked them down in January, even though they had paperwork listing them as the owners, they were told that the dogs had been adopted.

But on the witness stand, Bondi testified, "I don't believe they are the owners of Noah."

Godwin showed her a picture of the St. Bernard the day he was left at the makeshift shelter and asked, "Is that Noah?"

"No, ma'am," Bondi said sharply.

On the stand, Steven Couture described how he, his brother-in-law David Johnson and another relative were rescued by boat and taken to a nearby school but left jugs of water and dog food behind for the dogs. A 50-pound bag of food was not opened, and some of the jugged water was capped.

Rineker's attorney, Jeff Brown, asked how the dogs were expected to get into the sealed items.

"Bite into it," Steven Couture said. "It's a dog. It's survival."

Couture said that by the time the dogs were rescued, the dog food was opened and the bottles of water had been consumed.

Rineker said she never wanted to be in this position. Her family had just lost a dog, she testified. She said she saw Steven Couture's name on the paperwork as the dog's owner, asked a Humane Society worker about it and was told that "dog was surrendered."

"Our dog had passed away and we were heartbroken, and I didn't want to lose another dog," she said.

The hearing continues 9:30 a.m. Monday. Andringa has not indicated when he will make a ruling.

The residents of NYC had years to leave before another terrorist attack followed the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Centers. Saying that someone had "time" as the reason to allow crimes by Bondi to continue is to harbour a terrorist yourself.

Please listen to SamIAm, he knows how it feels to be separated from his family&his kids for TWO long years. PLUS MasterTank is being kept from his best friend since puppies, Nila as well. BondiRineker don't even bother to arrange play dates! Love??
by Sam-I-Am 05/12/07 08:21 AM
Dear Leah-what about the love&care the Couture family had for MasterTank&Nila for FOUR years? Is that now somehow invalid? Who is implying that Bondi cannot adopt&love A HOMELESS SHELTER dog instead of a "Katrina pet" that already has a loving home?
by Sam-I-Am 05/11/07 07:33 AM
Leah-in this case the REAL owners are their original family which MsBondi HAS BEEN AWARE OF SINCE JAN06. In your case-I'd assume that you only adopt-foster &KEEP TRULY HOMELESS pets-not ones which already have homes! You are an angel of love&hope :o)

People keep posting that Bondi shoud give the dog back to it's "real" owners. What does that imply? As both an adoptive pet owner and foster parent, I am offended by the notion that the love and care Bondi has shown for Noah is somehow invalid.

Bondi has some real issues. Give her a mental exam and give the dog back to its real family. Pam needs a good reality check, haircut and lawyer.

This is old news (3 mos). Judge has ruled MT/Nila to be returned. They are property of the REAL OWNERS. However, the other side is trying to make it as emotionally difficult as possible to the Real Family and their precious grandchildren.SHAME,SHAME!

I'm sick of hearing about the "victims" of Hurricane Katrina! These people had DAYS to get out of town and they didn't! These dogs deserve to be with their new owners and be given love and attention, not tied in a yard
by Micheal 12/27/06 11:26 AM
I think that the dogs should stay where they are. They were tied up outside even while the owners lived in LA. Ridiculous! The heat, humidity, and parasites that can harm a dog that is tied up outside all day... I can even imagine. Let Pam keep them!
by Betsy 12/27/06 11:24 AM
Ok maybe the shelter acted too fast but with all those animals, you have to put them somewhere. I understand that the family loves Tank but has anyone ever considered that with all the confusion there may have been a mix-up with the dogs?
by Linda 10/30/06 03:57 PM
As a pet owner/lover - I'd stay behind rather than leaving my animals - it would be like leaving your kids behind.
by Belinda 10/30/06 03:36 PM
Thank God for Katrina. These 2 dogs have been saved by their new guardians. The Coutures do NOT deserve to have any pet. They just kept them tied up outside. Thats called neglect. I pray they stay with their current loving guardians.
by nicole 10/29/06 09:33 PM
we all lost in katrina i think the dog should stay with his new parent.
by Stuart 10/28/06 09:51 PM
Their will always be a few scum like Bondi to make the rest of us look a little better. What a piece of filth
by Walter 10/28/06 04:27 PM
This is a joke, If it was their dog, Why would you leave it? No Excuse, Katrina was bad, But I for one am sick about hearing about it. My relatives and pets got out no proplem. Give a child away and try to get it back a tear later LOL
by Ed 10/28/06 03:08 PM
No "real family" abandons a pet. The Coutures victimized their own dog.
by Jill 10/28/06 03:06 PM
There is nothing more cruel than abandoning a pet and saving yourself, shame on the Coutures! They are not the "owners", they are the abandoners. Ms Bondi is a true humanitarian.
by Janice 10/28/06 02:43 PM
What does the dog have to say about it? Has anyone asked?
by Jeff 10/28/06 02:18 PM
Bondi is a Psycho....Give these people their dog back!! Perhaps the Judge should suggest to cut the dog in half and give half to each party. Then we will see the real rationale of Bondi.
by Sandra 10/28/06 02:05 PM
If a dog had to bite into a water jug to open it, I'm guessing most of the water was wasted, not "consumed"... Sounds like a stupid plan to me.
by suzanne 10/28/06 12:04 PM
I think it's time for Pam Bondi to just release master tank back to his rightful owners. Those people have suffered enough and all they want is both their pets back.
by shawnna 10/28/06 11:08 AM
They should just let the women keep the dogs-- if they love their dogs they would want a better home for them. I'm sure the dogs are better off with the new owners as supposed to the conditions they previously were in.
by William 10/28/06 10:17 AM
Bondi ought to get off her high horse and give the pet back to IT'S REAL FAMILY. She makes mor ethan enough off our taxes to buy herself a St. Bernard. She needs to do the right thing.
by Wayne 10/28/06 08:56 AM
Bondi should give it up! Let the Katrina victims have their dog back. Don't vicimize them twice!
by Mike 10/28/06 08:56 AM
There are many shelters that accept pets nowadays. How can you leave behind your pet (or in this case pets) with bags of sealed food and sealed water and expect them to survive. To me thats cruelty.
by Ken 10/28/06 08:41 AM
The whole story is sad, but I believe the dogs are far better off now than ever before outside in the heat.
by Vickie 10/28/06 06:07 AM
PULEEEEEZE...a toenail dispute? Bondi is a madwoman.I hope she never has to experiance what the Couture's have.Bondi should be ashamed, to say the LEAST.
by Kim 10/28/06 06:05 AM
The truth of the matter is the dogs will go back and be placed in the back yard. They will have to learn again put up with the cold, heat, fleas and mosquitoes. Their cruise is over.
