Alonso leaves no doubt in rout of Sickles
TAMPA — With winless Sickles coming in, Alonso was fearful of a letdown in its quest to win the Class 5A, District 6 title outright. It had nothing to worry about.
Ravens quarterback Cory Quintilliani scored on runs of 58, 57 and 15.
“This is exactly what we needed to get ready for the playoffs,” Quintilliani said.

Quintilliani finished with 164 yards on seven carries, and Alonso ran for 401 yards total.
Josh Mendez scored the Gryphon’s two touchdowns.
Armwood clinches playoff spot with shutout
SEFFNER — It’s been a while since Armwood had a must-win Week 9 game to make the playoffs, but that’s what the Hawks faced Friday night.
In the fashion of team that won back-to-back state titles and played for its third in a row last season, Armwood made sure there the drama didn’t last long .
The Hawks (8-1) turned a Lake Region fumble into a touchdown on their first possession of the game. The only glitches were four missed extra points.
Marquise Branton led the Hawks with 22 rushes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Armwood’s defense held Lake Region (3-6) to 35 total yards on 28 plays .
Blake rolls as Leto’s 1,000-yard back is hurt
TAMPA — Leto’s Rudontae Ashley needed 7 yards to surpass the 1,000-yard mark for the year and went past the milestone on a 4-yard touchdown run to give the Falcons the lead. However, Ashley dislocated his shoulder in the second half and was taken from the field in an ambulance.
Darius McRoy came in to gain 175 yards, but he was unable to score as Blake (3-6) and Leto (2-7) combined for nine lost fumbles. Blake back Willy Hopps had 146 yards and a TD, and Ryan Davis took the ball from a Leto back and went 31 yards for the tying TD.
Raiders dominate Bulls
VALRICO —The Bulls suffered their second straight shutout, as Plant City outgained Bloomingdale 215-108 in total offense.
The Raiders were carried by running backs Keith Dawson and Jacari Bennett. Dawson ran for a game-high 115 yards and touchdown. He also had a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown. Bennett chipped in with 75 yards to help Plant City, the 5A, District 7 champione.
The win for the Raiders was on the night of Bloomingdale’s Homecoming. Plant City coach Kevin Kelly remembers his team’s 31-14 loss to the Bulls last season.
“They beat us last year at our home,” Kelly said. “So our kids were fired up.”
Bulldogs rally past Bucs
TAMPA — Carlton Thomas ran for 210 yards, mostly in the second half, as Frostproof came back from a halftime deficit to rout Berkeley Prep.
Frostproof improves to 7-2 and 1-2 in Class 2B, District 6, while Berkeley Prep drops to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in district play.
The Bucs defense controlled Thomas throughout the first half, limiting him to just 32 yards while Berkeley Prep took advantage of Frostproof turnovers for a 10-7 lead.
But the lead quickly evaporated as Thomas scored on second-half runs of 68, 57, 42 yards. The Frostproof defense harassed Josh Knight, forcing four interceptions, one returned 40 yards for a score by Gabriel St. Louis.

In the first half, Brown racked up 113 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Gilmore finished the game with 81 yards and three touchdowns.

Aycock accounted for the Chiefs’ three touchdowns, running for two and throwing for another, and rushed for 114 yards on 13 carries as Chamberlain defeated King to clinch the Class 5A, District 6 runnerup berth at John Adcock Stadium.
Chamberlain (4-5 overall, 2-1 district) had to withstand several threats by King (3-6, 1-2), which was playing without offensive starters Dwayne Callaway and Michael Johnson due to disciplinary action.
The Lions missed a chance to tie the game at 14 late in the third quarter when Daniel Zychlinski’s PAT kick sailed wide right following Kingsley Aguta’s 25-yard touchdown run.

Terriers coach Garcia moves into second in wins
Tampa — Hillsborough coach Earl Garcia moved into second all-time for wins in Hillsborough County with 165. Garcia passed his former coach Roland Acosta with the victory.
“It’s a great feeling to be able to pass up my former coach,” said Garcia. “I don’t think I can catch up to the leader, who has 202, but this is still a great accomplishment.”
Hillsborough’s defense and special teams forced Gaither to spend a majority of the night on its end of the field. Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, the Cowboys drove to Hillsborough’s 32, but two penalties turned a fourth-and-1 into a fourth-and-11. After a John Chesnut incomplete pass, Hillsborough’s Eric Fennell found Terrence Mitchell in the end zone as time expired in the half.
Hillsborough’s running game took over from there led by Marc Thomas, who had 145 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Hillsborough’s defense forced eight punts and allowed 99 yards of offense.
Wolves turn back Tigers with late defensive stand
FISHHAWK — “Heart attack,” were the words first-year Newsome head coach Kenneth Hiscock used to describe his team holding off a 71-yard Middleton drive that ended on the 9-yard line with three straight incomplete passes.
The win causes a three-way tie in the district between Newsome, Freedom and Hillsborough. Monday, Newsome will host a one quarter tie-breaker between Hillsborough and Freedom with the winner to play the Wolves to see who will be the district champs.
Newsome kicker Vinny Zacarrio kicked a 56-yard field goal, making the game 27-21, but missed a 44-yarder giving Middleton three minutes to attempt to score on the failed final drive.

The Tigers were led by quarterback DeAndre Presley, who had 251 yards passing and two touchdowns.
Sharks miscue aids Sarasota in late victory
Trailing 14-7 late in the fourth quarter, an interception by Bryce Ogilbee kept Sarasota’s district championship hopes alive. The Sailors drove 28 yards and scored on a 9-yard touchdown run by quarterback Casey Kelly. The ensuing point after attempt was missed, but Riverview roughed kicker Taylor Violette. Kelly then found a wide open Robin Rothenbach for the winning two-point conversion.
Sarasota won the Class 6A, District 6 championship and the loss knocked Riverview out of the playoffs. Both teams are now 7-2.
Riverview ended a 12-play, 73-yard drive when Derron Doby intercepted a Casey Kelly pass in the end zone. On the Sharks’ next play, Ogilbee caught a deflected pass from quarterback Dustin Gorenc.
Kelly opened scoring when he found Rothenbach for a 62-yard touchdown on the teams’ third drive. Rothenbach finished with three catches for 85 yards. Riverview responded with a 13-play, 74-yard drive as Gorenc ran 7 yards for the score.

Rams make all the right moves against Cougars
SARASOTA — Durant knew a lot of things would have to go right to knock off Sarasota Riverview.
Unfortunately for Durant, it didn’t happen.
Instead, Riverview (6-3, 2-1) got most of the breaks and, combined with a tough, stingy defense, blanked the Cougars 21-0 to claim the second Class 6A, District 6 district playoff spot and knock Durant (4-5, 1-2) from the postseason picture.
Riverview junior Robert Glinton rushed a whopping 30 times for 178 yards and scored two touchdowns, and the Rams defense held the Cougars without a first down in the second and third quarters.
