  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Three cheers for Jeff Stabins

Three cheers for Jeff Stabins! He has proved he is an independent thinker and concerned about the residents of Hernando County. He is not a puppet who votes the way his party dictates.

Stabins has my renewed respect - and definitely my vote, should he run for re-election.

Game rooms are great fun for some

I just read the article in the Times by Jonathan Abel saying that the Diamond Dust game room will try to reopen.

Hooray for you, Lisa. I am very happy to hear this. It has been a very boring year since the game rooms closed.

I mentioned this to someone, but this person won't be going there to play for prizes; this person wanted the money. Well, you know what? It's people like that who gave the game rooms a bad name to start with. You need to stay away from game rooms and go to the casinos.

I do not have $500 to throw away in one night, then cry about it all week. I love playing the machines, and the game rooms made it possible for me to have some fun without spending a lot of money. I can take $20 and have a very enjoyable evening and make new friends. I don't mind playing for prizes. It's not about winning a lot of money; it's about having a good time. If you're looking to get rich, then go to the casinos.

The State Attorney's Office needs to leave the game rooms alone and put its energy into more important matters.

Veterans deserve property tax cut

All veterans who served the United States during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Iraq War, who risked their lives for the United States, deserve a 50 percent property tax reduction on all property they own, as long as they and their spouses are living, starting in 2007.

Most World War II veterans are closer to their last days if this fair tax starts later. It should pass now. God bless the U.S. veterans!
