One man died and two others were seriously injured Sunday when their car careened off the road, struck a concrete culvert and flipped over.
James W. Stretch, 36, of Tampa, was driving east on Keystone Road (County Road 582) near George Street South, when his 1994 Honda traveled off the road onto the shoulder. The car then returned to the road and crossed both east and westbound lanes of Keystone Road.
The car then started rotating and went onto the opposite shoulder, which is unpaved. It continued rotating until it hit the culvert and overturned.
John H. Stretch Jr., 56, and David S. Hechinger, 36, were passengers in the car. Stretch Jr. died on the scene. Stretch and Hechinger were transported to local hospitals for their injuries.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
Lutz woman dies in car crash near home
A Lutz woman died in a car wreck Saturday afternoon, just 10 minutes from home, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Jacqueline A. Nolshiem , 25, of 19008 Sunlake Blvd., was traveling east on Bearss Avenue just before 4 p.m. Saturday when an SUV exiting southbound Interstate 275 pulled out in front of her, troopers said.
Nolshiem's Honda hit the back of the Pontiac SUV, and her car began to spin. It came to a stop, overturned on a grassy shoulder. She died from her injuries.
The driver of the SUV, Michael D. Seery , 53, of Larkins Lane Carrick Road in Edenderry, Ireland, was not injured. His passenger, 48-year-old Margaret Seery, also was unhurt.
UT student on scooter hit crossing roadway
An 18-year-old University of Tampa student was critically injured Sunday morning when a car hit her as she crossed Kennedy Boulevard on some type of scooter, Tampa police said.
Natasha Sackett , of 5407 Watson Road, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
She was eastbound on Kennedy about 10 a.m. when she entered the intersection at Hyde Park on a green light.
Police said that's when Barbara Green, 72, of 622 Mormora Drive, hit her.
Pedestrian, 48, shot dead in the street
A 48-year-old man was shot to death in the street Sunday near 118th Street and 128th Avenue N. Police found a wounded Hoeschele Bernard Thomas of Largo about 1:20 a.m. He had been shot once, police said.
Thomas was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where he died. Residents of the neighborhood told police they heard only one gunshot. Thomas appeared to have been a pedestrian.
A dark-colored SUV, possibly a Jeep Cherokee, was seen in the area around the time of the killing, but it was unclear Sunday whether the vehicle was connected to the crime, police said. There were no suspects Sunday afternoon.
