Joyce Johnson, a veteran who regularly competes at Beverly Hills Bowl, snatched her first official U.S. Bowling Congress honors score two weeks ago.

During the Good Times League, Johnson pitched a second game 297 that included 11 consecutive strikes. Sandwiched in between a 176 and a 150, the 297 gave Johnson a 623 series. Her USBC honor marked the first such female achievement in the county this season.

Last season, Johnson averaged 193 while competing in two different leagues at Manatee. She is a member of the Fun Bunch League at Manatee this season. Good Times is the first sanctioned league that Johnson has ever bowled in at Beverly Hills.

MEN'S TOURNEY: Last week marked the finals of all events from the first annual Citrus County Men's Tournament. The three events that made up the tournament included the singles event, doubles events and team competition.

The team competition took place at Neffer's Bowl in Homosassa while the singles and doubles events were held at Beverly Hills.

A team sponsored by Home Entertainment Solutions took home first overall in the team competition over a 17-team field. Each squad consisted of four bowlers and measured over six games with their scratch totals. All events were based on scratch scoring. Home Entertainment Solutions won with a total of 3,739 pins.

In the doubles event, the tandem of Karl Hurdle and Doug Savage walked away with first overall with a total of 1,534 pins. The total was good enough to best 47 other entered duos.

Alex Rupp won the main event. The first ever Citrus County Men's Tournament championship went to Rupp after he totaled 851. In a highly successful tournament, he outlasted 95 others for the title.

Rupp competes in only one sanctioned league, the Firstnighters League at Sportsman's Bowl in Inverness. Last season while competing in the same league, he averaged 152. That average went up drastically over the summer while he competed at Beverly Hills, the site of the tournament. He averaged 182 in the Jim Lynch Fence Fun League at the center.

MANATEE SERIES: Manatee Lanes in Crystal River hosted the top male and female series in the county last week.

David Mann of the Monday Nite Turnovers League finished with a 707 series on the strength of 267 high scratch game. Mann spends most of his time competing in leagues at AMF Leesburg Lanes but the 205-average bowler has found success in leagues at Manatee over the past couple years.

Susan Sheehy, one of the top female competitors in the county, led the county with a 642 series during the Tuesday Gals League at Manatee. Her high game of 234 highlighted the three-game total.

Sheehy is one of the few area females to have a 300 game among her accomplishments. She accomplished that feat during the Tuesday Gals League in March 2005. One of the more influential members of the bowling community in Citrus County, Sheehy also frequently competes at Beverly Hills Bowl where she is a member of the Friday Nite Match Play League.
