CRYSTAL RIVER - The 17th annual Taste of Citrus was held Sunday night at the Crystal River Mall. It was sponsored by the Central Florida Community College Foundation Inc., with proceeds going toward scholarship funds. About 20 local businesses offered samples of some of their best recipes. The competing restaurants were divided into three groups: fine dining, casual dining and fast food. Catering was a fourth category. Guests received ballots to vote for their favorites after they had a chance to circulate from table to table dipping banana chunks into chocolate fountains, sipping fruit-flavored teas and munching on barbecued ribs. The ballots were tabulated, compliments of the Voter Education Program of Citrus County and Supervisor of Elections Susan Gill. The entries were also ranked by judges, whose assessments were tallied along with the opinions of the guests. Two more categories, presentations and desserts, were evaluated exclusively by the judges. These are the results of the 2006 Taste of Citrus - Education in Good Taste competition. -Fast food: Havana House, first place; CiCi's Pizza, second place; Pizza Hut, third place. -Catering: Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center, first place; Cedar Creek Assisted Living, second place; Citrus Memorial Health System, third place. -Casual dining: Sonny's, first place; Crystal River Ale House, second place; Oyster's Restaurant, third place. -Fine dining: Bentley's Restaurant, first place; Thai-Phoon Restaurant, second place; Caf on the River, third place. -Desserts: Tuscany on the Meadows, best of show. -Presentation: Crystal River Ale House, first place; Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center, second place; Citrus Memorial Health System, third place.
