RIDGE MANOR - On a mile-long straightaway, where State Road 50 cuts through the tall trees of the Withlacoochee State Forest, three people died in a brutal head-on crash.

The crash happened at 7:30 a.m. Monday just west of the Sumter County line.

Byron Pervesk, 48, of Apopka was driving west when, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, he crossed the center line.

His BMW smashed into the Chevrolet driven by Carl Patterson, 84, of Windmere.

The collision twisted the metal of both cars and left a 3-foot intrusion on the driver's sides, all but obliterating the left half of both cars.

Pervesk and Patterson died at the scene.

Martha Patterson, 82, a passenger, was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, but she died on the way.

The crash blocked traffic on this busy stretch of highway, with close to a mile-long backup of semitrailer trucks waiting for the wreckage to be cleared.

This should come as no surprise, I drive this road daily and see near crashes all the time. If law enforcment would patrol once in awhile it would help.
