List of county's top RBs gets a little longer
By TIMES STAFF
Published November 1, 2006
No matter whose numbers you abide by, Eric Riggins deserved a mention in our Tuesday Morning Quarterback feature on some of the top rushers in Hernando County history. Stories from 1995 in the Times archive show that Riggins had 1,105 yards and 17 touchdowns his junior year, which would have put him behind John Capel on the all-time single-season list. But Riggins says his actual total was closer to 1,500 yards. Either way, the former Hernando star, who committed to South Carolina before playing two years in junior college, is among the county's greats. So is Rian Williams, whom we also neglected to include in the list. The former Nature Coast star rushed for 1,728 yards in 2004, the Sharks' first season at the varsity level. Without further adieu, our updated list. (By the way, Riggins is now an assistant on the Nature Coast team that will attempt to keep Central running back DuJuan Harris from climbing even farther up the chart. "What we need to do is play assignment football, play Nature Coast football and be physical with this guy," Riggins said. "I think if we do that we'll be fine. From what I see, you can't give him a second chance. You can't miss him and then think you are going to come back and tackle him.")
