Allan Bense to head Bay County GOP

PANAMA CITY - Outgoing Florida House Speaker Allan Bense turned down requests from the state's Republican leaders to challenge incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson this year, but he isn't walking away from politics.

Bense agreed Monday night to serve as chairman of Bay County's Republican Party.

Republican leaders had courted Bense, who is term-limited and cannot return to his House seat, to take on Nelson. Bense declined, saying he wanted to stay in Panama City.

Bense wouldn't say if he viewed his election to the Bay County post as a precursor to a bid for the state Republican Party chairmanship.
