Foley extends stay in alcoholism clinic

Former Rep. Mark Foley will stay in a treatment program for alcoholism beyond the planned 30 days, his attorney said Wednesday.
Foley checked into a 30-day program at the Sierra Tucson center in Catalina, Ariz., on Oct. 1. It wasn't clear how much longer he will remain.
The Florida Republican resigned from Congress in September after he was confronted with sexually explicit computer messages he had sent to teenage male congressional pages.
Painted windshield a factor in fatal crash
A school bus the Lake County sheriff was driving when he was killed during a charity race had its windshield covered in paint, a fellow race participant said.
Obscured vision may have been the reason Chris Daniels left the bus door open, retired Lake County Sheriff Noel Griffin said in an interview with the Florida Highway Patrol.
Daniels, 47, was thrown from his bus Oct. 14 during the "Battle of the Badges" race at New Smyrna Speedway to raise money for youth ranches.
Plane crash kills instructor, student
A flight instructor and his student were killed when a small plane crashed Wednesday while attempting an emergency landing at a private airstrip.
The instructor, Daniel Monroe, 25, of Daytona Beach, died at the scene. The student, Daniel Richman, 37, a Canadian citizen, died after being airlifted to Halifax Medical Center.
Authorities said the twin-engine Beech Duchess was trying to land at the Spruce Creek Fly-In. It was based at Daytona Beach International Airport.
Feds move to protect rare sparrow's habitat
Federal wildlife managers want to designate 71,000 acres in western Everglades National Park and the Big Cypress National Preserve as "critical habitat" for the endangered Cape Sable seaside sparrow.
The Fish and Wildlife Service's proposal was published in the Federal Register Tuesday.
Federal scientists say it is a historic breeding ground and the largest remaining swath suitable for the species.
