Illness puts dog adoptions on hold

Hillsborough County Animal Services' staff has worked feverishly since last week to contain an unknown virus affecting dogs.

The county has halted dog adoptions until further notice. The staff is vaccinating all dogs at the Animal Services shelter at 440 N Falkenburg Road, a practice normally reserved for pets being adopted.

The department has sent samples to a laboratory and will announce findings when they become available, spokeswoman Marti Ryan said.

Veterinarians have not arrived at a diagnosis, but signs point to a virus similar to canine distemper, Ryan said. By Monday's announcement, the outbreak had affected six dogs ranging in age from puppies to 2 years old.

Distemper is an airborne virus affecting a dog's respiratory, intestinal and nervous systems. It is often fatal. Symptoms include watery secretions around the eyes, fever, coughing and vomiting.

Authorities have not interrupted adoptions of cats, which are not affected by the illness.

In the meantime, wildlife officers will do more to locate owners of loose dogs before bringing them to the shelter.

"This is a good time to check your vaccine, and to make sure your dog is wearing a tag and to keep it by your side," Ryan said.
