TAMPA - Tampa Police conducted a door-to-door search Thursday night after a young girl reported seeing a child held captive in the back seat of a car.

Police said a 10-year-old girl was playing outside in the Heritage Isles subdivision in New Tampa and said she saw a girl with tape over her mouth seated in the back of a moving car with two men in the front seat.

Police were alerted at 5:20 p.m.

The girl described the car as a blue compact vehicle, possibly a Nissan or a Volkswagen Jetta, with shiny rims and an antenna sticking up, police said.

While police knocked on doors in the Heritage Isles neighborhood, emergency officials began reverse 911, calling residences to alert them in case anyone had more information.

A helicopter conducted an air search with no results late Thursday.

"We don't have any reports of missing kids," said Larry McKinnon, spokesman for the Tampa Police Department, three hours after the alert sounded.

Though emergency officials were taking the matter seriously, McKinnon said, it's possible the sighting was a hoax.
