Accrediting council to visit Pasco schools

Now it's the Pasco County school district's turn to get graded. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement will visit the district and individual schools Monday through Wednesday to determine whether Pasco makes the grade. The 19-member team will evaluate how all processes and functions of the district work to benefit learning. The School Board will hold a workshop at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to hear a presentation on the team's findings. It will be held in the meeting room at the school district's headquarters in Land O'Lakes.

Prosecutor hopes to be county judge

Veteran prosecutor Mary Handsel is taking another shot at the bench. The Pinellas-Pasco assistant state attorney and former circuit judge candidate is one of 15 hopefuls who will be interviewed today for the vacant county judge's job in Pinellas. "It is important that the people who seek to serve have the qualifications and experience that the people of Pinellas County expect in their judiciary," said Handsel, 42. The 16-year veteran is supervisor of the west Pasco office, where she has worked since 2002. In September, she lost the three-way Group 9 circuit judge primary. Now she hopes to replace Pinellas County Judge Shawn Crane, who was appointed to the circuit bench by the governor. The interviews start at 9 a.m. at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport.

Water service to be interrupted

Lindrick Utilities says water service on Marlin Drive in New Port Richey will be interrupted for a few hours Monday starting at 9 a.m. Once repairs are complete, Marlin Drive residents will be asked to boil their water until further notice from the utility, probably several days. For more information, call 727-848-1165.

Correction:

Gailen Thurnau, Juanita Thurnau and Robert Peterson worked for Lockheed Martin. Because of incorrect information provided by Peterson's brother, a Friday story about the disappearance of Peterson and Gailen Thurnau named a different employer.
