Ex-Miami coach to North Carolina?
North Carolina athletic director Dick Baddour declined to comment Saturday on reports the school is close to hiring Butch Davis as coach. Citing unnamed sources, northcarolina.rivals.com reported that "barring some really strange turn of events," Davis will soon be named coach. ESPN.com reported unnamed sources said North Carolina has "tacitly offered" the job to Davis, the ex-Hurricanes and Cleveland Browns coach. Baddour fired John Bunting on Oct. 22.
Obscure game of the day
Princeton 31, Penn 30 (2OT): The visiting Quakers lost in overtime for the third consecutive week, a Division I record. Penn botched a snap on a 21-yard field goal in the first overtime but then blocked a field goal. On fourth and goal from the 1 in the second, the Tigers' Jeff Terrell handed off to Rob Toresco. He was stood up but didn't go down. He pitched it to Terrell, who was at the 10 but managed to score. The Quakers scored on the next play, a 25-yard pass. The snap on the extra point was fumbled. Holder Matt Reinert ran with it but was pushed out at the 2 to end it.
Players of the day
Joel Filani, texas tech: The senior caught eight passes for 212 yards, including touchdowns of 4, 32 and 76 yards, in a 55-21 win over Baylor.
Tyrell Sutton, northwestern: The sophomore ran for 168 yards and a TD in a 21-7 win over Iowa.
Colt Brennan, hawaii: The junior threw for 413 yards and six touchdowns in a 63-10 win over Utah State. His final touchdown was No. 39, breaking the school record Timmy Chang set in 2004.
Jeff Samardzija, notre dame: The senior caught six passes for 177 yards and his 23rd touchdown, surpassing the school record set by Derrick Mayes in 1995.
Number of the day
46 Length of a first-quarter field goal by Utah State's Brian Shields in a 63-10 loss to Hawaii. It was the Aggies' first field goal of the season in three tries (with one blocked). Alas, Shields missed a 33-yarder at the end of the first half.
Conference of the day
MID-AMERICAN: Of the 18 games involving MAC teams left, five are on a Saturday. Only one intraconference game is on a Saturday with three on a Tuesday, one on a Wednesday, two on a Thursday and seven on a Friday. As for the title game Nov. 30 (a Thursday), Ohio (5-1) took control of the East when it beat Eastern Michigan 16-10 and Kent State (4-2) lost 41-14 to Buffalo, whose only previous win came against Temple. Ohio also beat Kent State. In the West, Western Michigan (5-1) beat Miami (Ohio) 27-24 to set up Friday's matchup with Central Michigan (5-0).
