Spartans wrap up share of SSC championship

The Tampa volleyball team clinched a share of the Sunshine State Conference title on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Rollins in Winter Park.

Katelen Dixon had 11 digs and 11 kills for the Spartans (29-1, 15-1), who have won 12 straight and are ranked second in the AVCA Division II poll.

Florida Southern also earned a piece of the SSC championship as the eighth-ranked Moccasins (30-4, 15-1) defeated visiting Saint Leo 3-0. The Lions dropped to 21-10, 8-8. Also, Eckerd (21-13, 8-8) swept visiting Florida Tech 3-0.

STATE FINAL: Hillsborough Community College beat St. Petersburg College in the state junior college volleyball championship match at Polk Community College in Winter Haven. HCC won 30-21, 31-29, 20-15 over the Titans (28-9).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: St. Petersburg College lost to Florida Community College at Jacksonville 69-65 in its home opener. SPC guard Maria Anderson led the Titans (0-2), scoring 18 points while playing all 40 minutes.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Duke defeated Florida State 2-1 with two draws to advance to the semifinals of the Hooters Match Play tournament in Orlando. Florida won twice in the consolation bracket, beating SEC rivals South Carolina and Alabama.

SWIMMING: The Tampa men and women both placed first of five teams at the Rollins Relays in Winter Park, On the men's side, Tampa's freshman had 126 points and the upperclassmen had 103. For the women, the freshman had 132 points and the upperclassmen 108.

MEN'S TENNIS: UF's Greg Ouelette lost to Utah's Zach Ganger 6-4, 6-0, in the consolation singles draw quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor National Championship in Columbus, Ohio.
