Participants sought for lawn cards

Hernando County Parks and Recreation is now accepting participants for the annual Christmas Cards on the Lawn, which will be on display Dec. 11-29 on the Hernando County Courthouse lawn at 20 N Main St. Schools, churches and nonprofit organizations are invited to participate. Supplies needed include a 4-foot by 8-foot sheet of plywood with two braces to be anchored with rebar, at least one spotlight (but no more than two), a 24-hour timer, a short extension cord or power strip to connect lights and timer, and a 50-foot extension cord to connect the card unit to the power supply. The annual display is coordinated by the Recreation Department in cooperation with Brooksville Kiwanis. To register or for information, call 754-4031. HERNANDO COUNTY Fair Association will award scholarships The Hernando County Fair Association will award $2,000 in scholarships for the 2006-07 school year. Applications are available at all Hernando County high schools, as well as on the fairgrounds Web site at www.hernandocountyfair.com. Applicants must be Hernando County high school seniors or college students with a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher. Preference will be given to applicants who have been active in the Hernando County Fair within the past five years. The application deadline is April 2. For information, call 796-4552. Gardening calendar is now available The Hernando County Gardening Calendar for 2007 is available at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St. The calendar includes month-by-month expert advice on Central Florida landscaping. BROOKRIDGE Woman's Club taking reservations for bingo The Brookridge Woman's Club is taking reservations for the annual Bingo Bash that will be March 10 at the clubhouse, 8150 Hampton St. The cost is $35, which includes a doughnut, a homemade hot lunch, coffee and iced tea. BROOKSVILLE City Council seeks panel volunteers The Brooksville City Council is accepting applications from those who want to volunteer on the following boards: -Planning and Zoning Commission. There is a vacancy for an alternate position to fill a term through Jan. 31, 2009. -Personnel Board. There is a vacancy to fill a term through Jan. 31, 2008. All applicants for these volunteer, nonpaid positions must be Brooksville residents and registered Florida voters. Youth tennis lessons available on Mondays The city of Brooksville Recreation Department offers youth tennis instruction with the National Junior Tennis League from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays at the McKethan Park tennis facility, 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd. Instruction is for beginners ages 6-12. Civil Air Patrol seeks to train new members The Hernando County Civil Air Patrol is recruiting new members to train in emergency services, counter-drug operations, homeland defense, cadet programs, air search and rescue, and aerospace education. The CAP is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and is open to men and women 18 and older. Both air and ground team members are needed, and training is ongoing. The patrol also offers a cadet program for youths ages 12 to 18. PHCC to offer new certificate program Pasco-Hernando Community College will offer a new Business Operations Certificate program at the North Campus, 11415 Ponce de Leon Blvd. The program will start during PHCC's Spring 2007 semester, which begins Jan. 8. The program includes six business courses: Principles of Financial Accounting, Microcomputer Applications, Organizational Behavior, Principles of Supervision, Business Communications and Business Mathematics. HERNANDO BEACH Programs for boaters offered by auxiliary The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer these programs: - How to Read a Nautical Chart, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. This is a presentation to familiarize visitors with all aspects of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, including member training, public education and community outreach. There is no cost to attend. Coast Guard Auxiliary members will go to where the boat is stored, or to a ramp. Once the boat passes the check, owners will receive a decorative decal for the boat. The college will provide applications and information at the sessions. The alternative teacher certification program is part of PHCC's Educator Preparation Institute, which has been approved by the Florida Department of Education to provide certification for people with bachelor's degrees who wish to become K-12 teachers. Registration open for lacrosse season Hernando County Recreation is now taking registrations for the 2007 Hernando Crusaders lacrosse season. The league is open to youths in the fourth through 12th grades. The cost is $65. Also, a free clinic will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 6 at Veterans Memorial Park. The clinic is open to anyone interested in learning more about lacrosse. Spaces still open for preschool program Spaces are still available in the Karousel Kids preschool program for 3- and 4-year-olds. Volunteers needed for Mutt Strutt event Hernando County Recreation is seeking volunteers to help the Mutt Strutt event that will be Nov. 19 at Anderson Snow Park on Anderson Snow Road. Volunteers will be needed to help out between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The event itself will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include a variety of activities for dogs and their owners, including a variety of contests and a 1-mile fun run with dogs and owners. Admission to the event will be $5 per car, with proceeds to help build the Rotary Centennial Park, which will include a dog park, in Spring Hill.
