TAMPA - Adam Putnam, a rising star in the Republican Party, sailed to a fourth term in Congress on Tuesday.

Putnam, 32, easily beat two no-party candidates in the 12th Congressional District by a wide margin.

Putnam, of Bartow, serves on the House Rules Committee and the Budget Committee and is chairman of the Republican Policy Committee.

A fifth-generation Floridian from a citrus and cattle-ranching family, Putnam has a record of voting consistently with his party, with some important exceptions.

On major issues, he supported the war in Iraq and supported President Bush's proposal for a guest-worker program regarding immigrants.

Candidate Joe Viscusi, 53, an assistant principal at Gause Academy in Bartow, served in the Florida House of Representatives in the early 1990s as a Democrat.

But he chose to run as a no-party candidate, he said, because he was disillusioned with both major parties.

He opposed the war in Iraq and advocated devoting more government resources for education and health care.

The other candidate, Ed Bowlin, 44, is a former Marine studying for a bachelor's degree in political science.

The Lake Wales resident campaigned against the war in Iraq and extending free trade agreements in Central and South America.
