Cop crawls under house to rescue boy

ST. PETERSBURG - It was a desperate scene.

A 2004 Jeep Liberty crashed into a 1996 Ford Taurus carrying a mother and her son Monday night. J'Marion Wright, 16 months old, was thrown 20 feet from the Taurus, rolling under the raised foundation of a house at 4800 12th Ave. S.

Police Officer Scott Cameron, 25, found a small crowd when he arrived at the scene. A woman told him that a baby was trapped under the house.

He unbuckled his gun belt, got down on his stomach and started crawling. He picked up J'Marion and cradled his neck. He performed infant CPR.

He remembers how J'Marion snapped back to life and started crying after he began chest compressions.

Cameron crawled back out to medical workers while carefully holding J'Marion.

Both J'Marion and his mother, Juanita Wright, 23, were taken to Bayfront Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Police are searching for the two men in the Jeep and say they may have been involved in drug dealing.

As for Cameron, he'll remember the happiness he felt when he finally heard the boy cry: "It was probably the best noise I've ever heard."

Was the baby in a correctly installed car seat? Doesn't mention either that or seatbelts.
