Springstead picks right up where it left off

SPRING HILL - With the football regular season officially over, wrestling kicked into gear with the Springstead Preseason Classic on Wednesday night.
The Eagles hosted Hernando, Lakeland and Mitchell for the first action of the season. Despite some of the bumps that are expected this early, Springstead again proved to be the cream of the crop.
Returning seven state qualifiers from last season's region championship team, Springstead looked primed for a repeat of that success in dual matches against Lakeland (42-31) and Mitchell (67-12).
"The first night looked like the first night," Springstead coach Eric Swensen said. "We still have a lot of improvement to make over the course of the season, but we're ready for it."
Schuyler Swanton, Springstead's first All-American, went 2-0 in the 103-pound weight class. Swanton pinned Mitchell's Alex Brown in 40 seconds and defeated Lakeland's Nathan Gates, a fellow All-American, in a 9-2 decision.
Hernando is coping with an influx of newcomers into its rotation. The Leopards responded by splitting their dual matches. Lakeland took out the Leopards (57-24) in the first meeting while Mitchell fell to Hernando in the second (60-24).
