West Meadows residents hoping to get fit will get some help next year. The community along New Tampa Road is expanding its fitness center to include state-of-the-art equipment in a bigger space. The addition will also feature a 1,000-square-foot building to accommodate parties and meetings.

Work is expected to be completed by late January or early February, said Albert Romano, assistant manager for the West Meadows Community Center, which serves 1,700 families.

The complex replaces a gym that had just 250 square feet of space and a party room that had just one sink, Romano said.

The new party and meeting room will have a kitchen and a restroom. The total cost of the additions will be about $400,000.

The community center, which boasts a junior Olympic-size pool, a toddler pool and a two-story slide, is the site of parties each weekend.

"The additions are definitely needed because most people were using gyms outside the facility," Romano said. "If they want to, they are more than welcome to come here."
