  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

A milestone for the mentally ill

The Florida House District 61 race is a victory of the mentally ill. Why? Never before has a Harbor Behavioral Healthcare client been known to qualify for the ballot by collecting more than 1,000 signatures of registered voters.

But, even more importantly, the local Democratic Party did nothing to cut him off, shut him up or put him down.

At a rally Nov. 5 at the Historic Courthouse in Dade City, an aide to Daryl Jones told me "our party cannot concede any race. We must field a candidate every time."

Voting online a good next step

Why are we not able to cast our votes online? We have our precinct cards. We know our names, addresses, and telephone numbers. This type of voting would be just as safe as going into the crowded church or some far-fetched building, under guard.

We need another sure means that will give all a fair chance to cast a ballot. There are people not able to leave their homes and, amid the confusion, forget to apply for an absentee ballot. Let us use our cards to apply online to vote.

School Board did right by teacher

The Pasco School Board showed maturity rejecting efforts to fire Patti Withers. Depression is a disease that can be treated. Ms. Withers' return to the classroom should be guided by her doctor in cooperation with school officials.

Life can get you down and that's when friends and colleagues have to show their support. Kudos for the School Board and those that stood by Patti Withers.

Rising prices, but same bad service

The Postal Service price is always going up and the service is very poor.

I have lived here for 13 years. They should know my name by now. I have received mail from Connecticut and they send it back marked "unknown." Also, in my box, I receive four letters with different names.

I have gone to the Postal Service office many times. I spoke with the postmaster and postmistress and nothing has been done. I really think that is not proper.
