The Hurricanes (5-2, 2-3 ACC) play four days after senior defensive tackle Bryan Pata was killed at his apartment complex. Coach Larry Coker said the players didn't vote but the consensus was to play because Pata would have wanted it. The players will wear No. 95 decals on their helmets to honor him. The Canes will try to end a two-game losing streak behind new quarterback Kirby Freeman. He replaces Kyle Wright, who has a broken thumb on his throwing hand. It will be the first start for Freeman, a redshirt sophomore who is 25-of-50 for 308 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions in 13 career appearances. Safety Kenny Phillips (broken hand), offensive tackle Reggie Youngblood (knee) and linebacker Tavares Gooden (knee) are out. The Terps (7-2, 4-1) have won four consecutive ACC games by a combined 12 points since falling 27-23 at Georgia Tech.
