QB leads Crusaders to win
TAMPA - After a slow start, Tampa Catholic stormed back to score 31 unanswered points to seal the victory.
In a game that featured the teams sharing the same mascot, it was the passing Crusaders over the running Crusaders as quarterback Dickie de Lama led Tampa Catholic, completing 14 of 22 passes for 175 yards.
Trailing 6-3 with less than five minutes to go in the first half, de Lama drove Tampa Catholic down the field and threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Gonzalez to put his team up 10-6.
Just as Cardinal Newman was starting to gain momentum in the third quarter, Jermi Wilkes snagged a tipped ball and returned it 80 yards for a score, putting Tampa Catholic up 24-6.
"That play really turned the whole game around," said Tampa Catholic coach Bob Henriquez. "They were driving and gaining some momentum, but Jermi's play forced them to get out of synch and have to pass the rest of the game."
After allowing a first-quarter touchdown, Tampa Catholic's defense forced four three and outs, two interceptions and recovered a fumble.
