Replay system malfunctioned during Rose Bowl
By TIMES WIRES

NEW YORK - Replay officials at last season's national title game could not review a Texas touchdown that should have been overturned.
David Parry, the Big Ten and national coordinator of officials, said Friday that he went to the replay booth during the Rose Bowl between Southern Cal and Texas to ask about Selvin Young's 12-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Replays appeared to show Young received a pitch from Vince Young after the quarterback's knee hit the ground.
Parry said replay officials told him one of the feeds they received while trying to review the play showed fans. They did not see the definitive shot until it was too late.
The problem was fixed after the play, and Texas won 41-38.
The game's assistant replay official, Dick Honig, said the same problem might have affected the review of an earlier play, when Reggie Bush lost a fumble trying to lateral the ball. Replays appeared to show the ball going forward, which would have resulted in a penalty but Southern Cal retaining possession.
EX-FSU COACH DIES: Don Veller, Florida State's first full-time paid coach, died in Tallahassee. He was 94. Mr. Veller went 31-12-1 from 1948-52, including the school's first unbeaten season in 1950.
"Don Veller came to Tallahassee when it was a small, sleepy town, and he'll be remembered as one of the first people to put FSU athletics on the map," FSU president T.K. Wetherell said. "But more important than that was the many solid citizens he helped develop by the lessons he taught and the examples he set."
FSU: Quarterback Drew Weatherford was named to ESPN The Magazine's academic all-district team for the second straight year. The business finance major has a 3.49 grade point average.
USF: The Nov. 18 game at Louisville will start at 7:30 and air on ESPNU.
Hat trick lifts FSU at NCAA soccer tourney
TALLAHASSEE - Katrin Schmidt's hat trick helped FSU beat Jacksonville 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament. At 1 p.m. Sunday, the Seminoles (15-3-4) face Cal, which beat Auburn 3-1.
Kelly Rowland made it 1-0 in the fourth minute off a cross from Becky Edwards. Schmidt's header from just outside the 6-yard box, off Rowland's throw-in, made it 2-0 in the 23rd. Schmidt made it 3-0 14 minutes later off a set play on a free kick.
And seven minutes after that, she capped the school's first hat trick in an NCAA Tournament game by converting Kirsten van de Ven's pass.
GATORS WAIT: Florida's first-round game against Loyola of Chicago in Milwaukee was rained out. The game was rescheduled for 2 p.m. today with Marquette-Purdue afterward. The winners are scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. Sunday.
VOLLEYBALL: Gabriela Saade had 51 assists as host Tampa beat Barry 3-0 to reach the South region final. UT (31-1) hosts Florida Gulf Coast at 4 p.m. today.
BASEBALL: FSU signed 12 players, 10 from Florida. Included is one of the nation's top pitching prospects, Michael Main of Deltona's DeLand, and Jack Posey, brother of current catcher Buster Posey.
MEN'S SWIMMING: Host Florida lost 127-116 to Texas, which is No. 3 in the collegeswimming. com poll. The Gators, at No. 10, got NCAA provisional qualifying times from sophomore Lucas Salatta in the 200-meter individual medley (1:47.70) and 200 back (1:44.21).
