Sheffield sent to Detroit
The Yankees traded Gary Sheffield to the Tigers on Friday for three pitching prospects. Sheffield was upset after New York picked up his $13-million option because he doesn't want to play first base. In Detroit, he primarily will be a DH.
Marshall gets scare during flight
A charter plane carrying Marshall's football team to a game at East Carolina was evacuated Friday after smoke was reported in an engine. It happened almost 36 years to the day, Nov. 14, 1970, when a plane carrying Marshall home from a game at East Carolina crashed. It killed 75, including most of the team. Rays seek advice on stadium issues
The Devil Rays are asking fans what they'd like to see in a new stadium. They have contacted some season-ticket holders and random area residents and, in addition to gauging interest in further Trop improvements, asked if they preferred a stadium with a retractable roof, an open-air facility or a partial roof. Among other questions was the best place for a stadium, with the St. Petersburg waterfront, Gateway area and the current location as options. "We're simply testing fan attitudes as part of our long-range strategic planning, and nothing is imminent on a new facility," said Rick Vaughn, vice president of public relations.
