Despite headache, Mosley drives on

Randy Mosley, director of golf at the Vinoy, finished fourth at the North Florida PGA Qualifying Tournament, qualifying for next year's PGA Club Pro Championship. The top 20 finishers there move on the PGA Championship, one of four majors on the PGA Tour.

It didn't take a second round of 4-under 68 for Mosley to make the top-nine cut at Lone Palms in Lakeland, but it offset his opening round of 74. Two 74s would have led to a tie for 21st, well off the mark.

Mosley said his low round of the tournament on the second day was due to a combination of driving well, plus solid chipping and putting.

"I hit 12 greens in regulation and didn't three-putt once," Mosley said. "In all, I had 14 pars and four birdies, despite the fact I played with a headache all day. It even got to the point where my playing opponent offered to tee up my ball for me it hurt so much when I bent down."

Besides winning $2,500, Mosley will travel to Oregon next spring with a chance to qualify for the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla.

MORE NORTH FLORIDA: Rod Perry of Daytona Beach won with rounds of 71-70-141.

Other top-nine finishers who advance include Tony Perez, Clearwater Executive, tie for fourth, 143; Rick Sopka, Tampa's Ben Sutton School, also 143; and Tim Polce, eighth, Dade City's Go For Birdies Range, 144.

Matt Mitchell of the Downs Practice Facility finished at 148, one stroke ahead of Belleair's Jim Slattery, Jim Smith of Missing Links Range and Lanier Waters, formerly an assistant at Bardmoor, now at Disney World.

FUTURES TOUR Q-SCHOOL: Former Florida Gator Amanda Dick (Countryside High) is among a field of 269 hopefuls playing in the four-round qualifier this week in Lakeland trying to gain or retain status for 2007. Dick was joined by amateur Missy Pederson of Clearwater, winner of last month's St. Petersburg City Championship, and Julie Duling of St. Petersburg. Tampa's Darlene Stowers and Elizabeth Stuart also competed. There was a strong international field, including Russian sisters Maria and Anastasia Kostina of Moscow, via Washington State University.

COLLEGES: Co-captain Justin Meier (East Lake High) led Tufts University in scoring at the recent New England Intercollegiate Championships, held on Cape Cod. Meier, a junior, finished 34th among a field of 215 players, with scores of 79-77-156 on back-to-back days of blustery winds from the Atlantic.

- At DeLand, freshman Danielle Jackson (Northside Christian) led Stetson to a fifth-place finish in the Hatter Fall Classic with a three-round score of 229. Freshman Rachel Edwards (Seminole High) was on Daytona Beach Community College's winning team.

CGA: Ed Shedd and Ken Paladino of Dunedin teamed for a 3-under 69 on Monday, winning at Heritage Harbor. Bobby Jolley and Jim Montali went lower (66), winning the senior division over Bob Boldus and Gene Hagen, 68. In net scoring, 63 won for Brian Baldwin and Les Robison.

The CGA plays again Monday at East Lake Woodlands and on Thursday at Lansbrook. For details, call (727) 446-6644.

JUNIORS: Andrea Messer and Evan Jensen, who play for Largo High, travel to Lake Buena Vista the day after Thanksgiving for a 36-hole major on the Florida Junior Tour.

FLORIDA STATE GA: Interclub team matches begin in January, reports association director Jim Demick. Teams of eight will play each week on Thursdays. There is no cost other than cart fees. To learn more about the matches, visit www.fsga.org or call the Tampa office at (813) 632-3742.

COMING UP: Moccasin Lake Nature Park's annual fundraiser is Nov. 18 at 8 a.m. at Lansbrook. It's a four-person scramble with an individual fee of $85. Call Cliff Norris at (727) 742-0600.
