OLDSMAR - The library's teen room is the size of a closet, the children's room is "teeny-tiny," and there are only five public computers.

The library, currently in the historic bank building on State Street, is suffering growing pains, which is why library director Bert Weber was ecstatic about Tuesday's groundbreaking ceremony for a new building.

The new library will have a children's area several times larger than the current one, triple the number of public computers, a cafe and a screened-in, outdoor reading room.

It will be more than three times the size of the existing 7,800-square-foot library.

"I am excited," Weber said. "I am so excited. I've waited a long time for this and for us to actually break ground and start the physical construction of this. I'm walking on air."

The corner of St. Petersburg Drive and Dartmouth Avenue is the site of the new facility.

Last month, the City Council awarded Honors Contractors Inc. of Oldsmar the $4.9-million contract to build the library. It's expected to be completed in about a year.

The mayor and council used gold shovels and hard hats. Everyone received a goody bag with treats, including tool-shaped gummy candy, a bookmark and a pencil in the shape of a hammer.
