Bank site too expensive for new City Hall

No one can say where the next City Hall building will be. But city commissioners on Tuesday made fairly certain where it won't be.

After entering into a non-binding contract to buy the Wachovia Bank building on Eighth Street downtown for $1.8-million, officials now say that option is not financially viable. City Manager Harold Sample said necessary renovations and expansions to the 2.5-acre site would push the total cost to at least $3-million, and with the apparent slowdown in new development, the city can't count on future revenue to pay for it. Commissioners reluctantly agreed. The city plans to send a letter to Wachovia declining the $1.8-million deal while asking to entertain a lower price.

New traffic signals up and slowing

No more dashing down the stretch between Collier Parkway and Interstate 75 - the lights are on.

New traffic signals at State Road 54 and Oak Grove Boulevard were turned on Tuesday. The lights are a $225,000 project shared by the Ferman Pontiac-Buick-GMC car dealership, Oak Grove's developer and the county.

Churches offer early Thanksgiving
