JACKSONVILLE, FIU COACHES HEAD FOR EXIT
Two college football programs are parting ways with their first-ever head coaches. Jacksonville's Steve Gilbert was fired Wednesday, and Florida International's Don Strock resigned but will coach the final three games of a season that is still dealing with effects of the brawl against Miami last month. "Now is a good time to move on to other challenges," said Strock, who has a 15-38 record. "I wish FIU every success." Gilbert, who had a 36-54 record after starting the JU program 10 years ago, will be replaced on an interim basis by offensive coordinator Andy McLeod.

Smith was dubbed "The Big Easy" for his laid-back elegance and charm.
Longhorns fan may feel long arm of law
A Texas Longhorns fan is blaming Doug Flutie for the 45-42 loss to Kansas State on Saturday. The fan was upset with Flutie's TV analysis and threatened him and his family, according to police. The threat was sent in an e-mail to Flutie's Foundation for Autism. "At this point, the information is disconcerting enough to follow this up the best we can," police Lt. Paul Shastany told the Boston Herald. Police, who believe the fan lives in California, revealed part of the message: "You jinxed the Longhorn faithful and a chance at the national title."
That Gibbs guy, remember him?
Longtime fans will remember this, but newer fans might be surprised to learn that Redskins coach Joe Gibbs was the Bucs offensive coordinator in 1978. That season, the Bucs ranked 28th (that was last) for the third consecutive season. Fines for drops go up, 3C
Barber twins on sexiest list
NFL stars Tiki and Ronde Barber and top-ranked tennis doubles players Bob and Mike Bryan are featured in People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue. They are included in the "Sexiest Twins" category. "Tiki has taught me how to dress," said Ronde, the Bucs cornerback. "I've picked up attention to detail from him."
