The city wants an extra 1,500 feet between offenders and children.

TAMPA - The Tampa City Council on Thursday agreed that the city and county should work together on crafting an ordinance that would dictate where sexual offenders and predators can live. At the suggestion of Council member Shawn Harrison, the City Council voted to have city attorneys to contact county officials so the collaboration can begin. State law bars some sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school, day care center, park or playground. The City Council voted Nov. 2 to explore an ordinance that would extend that buffer to 2,500 feet in Tampa. Hillsborough County commissioners voted Wednesday to develop their own ordinance. Council member Rose Ferlita, who next week begins her term as a county commissioner, said if the two ordinances are considered in isolation, it could lead to unfair concentrations of sex offenders in certain neighborhoods. "I'm hoping ultimately we can come up with a uniform ordinance so we can come up with something everybody can work with," Ferlita said. "Ultimately, we are all in this together."
