Coalition plans fight against adoption ban
Equality Florida held a news conference Saturday to announce a new coalition that plans to fight the state's longstanding ban on adoptions by gays and lesbians.
Brian Winfield, spokesman for the St. Petersburg-based gay-rights group, said the Coalition for Fair Adoption represents 20 local, state and national groups that believe children in foster care without parents are suffering because of the law, which has been in place since 1977.
"It prevents these children from having loving, stable homes," he said. "A judge should be able to make a decision on adoption on a case-by- case issue."
Winfield also said state Sen. Nan Rich, a Democrat representing parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties, has committed to filing a bill this legislative session to repeal the ban. Rich filed similar legislation last year without success.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office ran two sobriety checkpoints Friday night.
On the whole, the drivers who passed through the traffic bottlenecks proved to be a fairly sober bunch.
Here's how the results broke down:
Even though just four people were arrested on DUI charges, Sgt. Jim Bordner said another purpose of the exercise is to educate people about the dangers of impaired driving.
"We've been doing this for a while now," he said. "Perhaps we're starting to see lower numbers because we're out there doing this."
