A woman was recovering Saturday from skin graft surgery for burns she suffered when she rescued her 4-week-old twin sons and two other children from a fire in their apartment, then went back to save a fifth child. Firefighters found Nabila Nazli, 38, unconscious from smoke inhalation but still cradling 5-year-old daughter, Nimrah, to protect her from the flames in their second-floor apartment early Thursday. "She was never really that brave before," 10-year-old Umar Naseer said about his mother. "Before she was always worried about stuff like nutrition and all this boring stuff. Now she was saving our lives." Hospital standoff ends in death An armed gunman died after he opened the door to his suburban Chicago hospital room at the end of a 4½ hour standoff Saturday and pointed his gun at police, who opened fire, authorities said. The unidentified 58-year-old man died of a gunshot wound to the head. He appeared to have shot himself, but police were still investigating, Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said. It wasn't clear whether the gunman ever fired at the officers. He had briefly held a 71-year-old patient hostage in the room at Provena Mercy Medical Center, but released him unharmed. No one else was injured. Shooting at mall wounds three Three people were shot during what appeared to be a gangland-style confrontation in the food court of the Westfield Annapolis mall Saturday evening, and one was critically wounded. Ray Leone, manager of the Borders Books & Music, said he heard at least 10 gunshots. Two victims were flown to area hospitals, said Lt. Roy Phillips, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County fire department. The third was driven to a local hospital, he said. Two victims were male, and Phillips did not know the gender of the third victim. Dr. King and wife united in crypt Ten months after her death, Coretta Scott King is in her final resting place next to her husband, slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The single crypt that had housed Dr. King's body at the grounds of the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change has been replaced by a larger one, and Coretta Scott King's body has been moved to it from a temporary grave. She died at age 78 of complications from a stroke and ovarian cancer on Jan. 30. Fugitive says guards abuse him Former fugitive Ralph "Bucky" Phillips, suspected of killing one state trooper and wounding two others while on the run, says he is being mistreated by jail guards because of his notoriety. Phillips, 44, claims the guards at the Chemung County Jail are attempting to provoke him by using obscenities, watching him while he showers, leaving a television on all night so he can't sleep and denying him routine privileges. The abuse claims were described in a six-page letter to the Buffalo News published Saturday. He also said he has been denied visits, access to a phone and religious services. Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss, whose department runs the jail, said, "He's not being abused in any way whatsoever." He said Phillips is under constant surveillance because he is considered an escape risk and possibly violent.
