Presidential candidate sues in election loss

The former rebel who lost Congo's presidential election filed a lawsuit Saturday claiming he was cheated of millions of votes . Jean-Pierre Bemba vowed to "use all legal avenues to ensure the will of the people is respected," indicating he would not enlist the hundreds of fighters he has in the capital. The pledge was seen as crucial for Congo's fledgling democracy. Bemba won 42 percent of the vote, according to the Independent Electoral Commission. President Joseph Kabila won 58 percent in the Oct. 29 runoff. RUSSIA Chechnya suspect is killed in Moscow The former head of one of Chechnya's shadowy security forces was fatally shot in Moscow on Saturday by law enforcement officers who were trying to detain him on suspicion of abductions and killings in the violence-plagued southern region, officials said. Movladi Baisarov was shot when he resisted officers seeking to detain him on a main avenue in the capital, said Svetlana Petrenko, spokeswoman for the Moscow prosecutor's office. A prosecutor at the scene, Irina Bobinova, said he pulled a grenade when police tried to arrest him after he got out of a car. MEXICO 3 lawyers reported killed in prison raid At least three of 10 lawyers being held hostage by inmates were killed Saturday after police raided the prison in central Mexico to try to rescue them, Mexican media reported. It was not immediately clear whether the lawyers were killed by inmates or police during the raid which ended in a shootout. El Universal newspaper and the government news agency Notimex reported that a prisoner was killed in addition to the three lawyers, who were seized Friday in the Mil Cumbres prison in Morelia. ETHIOPIA Conviction in U.S. protested by 2,000 About 2,000 people demonstrated in Addis Ababa on Saturday to demand the release of an Ethiopian immigrant sentenced to 10 years in prison in the United States for mutilating the genitals of his 2-year-old daughter.
