  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Do we thank Katherine Harris for this?

One of the least expected hit movies of the past year was An Inconvenient Truth. The documentary's vivid but sobering news about global warming was no surprise to anyone who has been paying attention, but what was surprising were the warmth and - dare we say it? - charisma of its star, former Vice President Al Gore, above. Don't believe it? See for yourself: The film comes out on DVD Tuesday.

Cooling down the credit cards

Speaking of global warming and the unbridled consumerism that feeds it, Saturday is Buy Nothing Day. That's right, you heard us: It's not Battle Your Way Into the Mall Parking Lot and Shop Like a Crazy Person Day that's Friday. Created by social activism group Adbusters, Buy Nothing Day is an international event aimed at making us more thoughtful consumers. For information, go to adbusters.org and select from "more campaigns."

'The Boondocks' and beyond

At one time or another, Aaron McGruder has ruffled the feathers of liberals and conservatives, blacks and whites and just about everyone else with his satirical comic strip The Boondocks, about two young black brothers living in white suburbia. Tonight at 7, McGruder talks about "Ethics in Dissent" at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa; it's free.

A pig, a parade, a peerless voice

NBC has some classics lined up for TV viewers this week. At 8 p.m. Tuesday, a national treasure celebrates his 80th birthday (a bit late; it was Aug. 3) on the concert special Tony Bennett: An American Classic. On Thursday, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast starts at 9 a.m.; at 2 p.m. the network airs the utterly charming pig paean Babe (good thing it's not a movie about a sheepherding turkey).

The thankful majority parties

Three Democratic senators are celebrating birthdays as well as new jobs this week. Today, new chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee Joseph Biden turns 64. On Tuesday, just-elected majority whip Richard Durbin will be 62. And on Thursday, Charles Schumer, named to the newly created position of vice chairman of the caucus (making him third most powerful Democrat in the Senate), turns 56.
