Mary Mulhern filed Monday to run for the Tampa City Council District 2 seat.

Mulhern is a political newcomer who made her first bid for public office this year with a run for the Hillsborough County Commission. City Council member Rose Ferlita won that race Nov. 7.

But Mulhern said in a press release that supporters urged her to run in March for election to the City Council after a "strong showing in my grass roots campaign for County Commission."

Mulhern runs a fine art consulting business. Previously, she worked 13 years as an administrator at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her husband, Cameron Dilley, is a founder of the community radio station WMNF-FM 88.5.

So far, Mulhern's only opponent in the race for the citywide seat is council member Shawn Harrison, who represents North Tampa.
