Music

Get Ziggy with it

Ziggy Marley has been recording music longer than Bob ever did. And yet, at 38, the son of reggae's most culturally significant artist still stands in his father's shadow. That's partly because Ziggy bears a remarkable resemblance to his dearly departed old man, still a popular T-shirt symbol for budding rebels everywhere.

But the bigger problem is that Ziggy commenced his career as a prodigious fireball, igniting musical imaginations with fiercely catchy political music. Conscious Party, 1989's breakout disc, is one of the great reggae albums of all time. Along with such thoughtful hits as Tomorrow People and Tumblin' Down, there was the incendiary Lee and Molly, "white guy in love with black beauty." Although Ziggy would sporadically make fine music after that, he never capitalized on that promising start. And so it goes: In a live setting, Ziggy will seduce and soothe you with gently rolling reggae tunes far too tame for Dad - then jar you awake with a lightning bolt that reminds you whose son he is.

Ziggy Marley performs at 8 tonight at Jannus Landing, 200 First Ave. N, St. Petersburg. $23.50. (727) 896-1244; www.jannuslanding concerts.com.
