Within an hour Wednesday night, one person was dead and another injured in separate incidents as they attempted to cross state roads.

Stephen L. Jones, 17, was driving eastbound on State Road 52 and nearing the Choctaw Trail intersection in Hudson. At 8:30 p.m., Thomas E. Collins - a 54-year-old who lived less than half a mile down the road - tried to cross S.R. 52. Jones' car, a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina, struck Collins, killing him. An investigation is continuing, the report said.

About an hour later, a family in a 2006, four-door Chevrolet hit and injured a woman who, authorities said, was running across S.R. 54.

The Florida Highway Patrol withheld the victim's name. A report said she is a white, 25-year-old from New Port Richey.

The vehicle was driven by Joseph B. Benz, a 36-year-old of Holiday. With him were: Gidget Benz, 33; Stephanie Patterson, 14 and Bryan Benz, 10.

No injuries were reported by the vehicle's passengers.

The woman was taken to Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg. Her condition was not known as of Thursday night.
