ST. PETERSBURG

Advocates of homeless protest

On the day after Thanksgiving, the 4,800 homeless people living in Pinellas County, probably more than half of them in St. Petersburg, remained without homes, heat and full meals.

So on a day known for over-consumption, some advocates for the homeless decided to feed them at Williams Park, march with them over to BayWalk for a brief protest, then return to Williams Park to bed down in violation of city ordinances.

Organizers hoped to have up to 50 volunteers join perhaps just as many homeless at the event Friday night.

Organizers said they want city officials to meet a number of demands they believe would help the homeless, including keeping public restrooms open at all hours, designating an area downtown where the homeless could sleep without fear of being arrested and creating more beds and laundry facilities for the homeless.

City fires risk manager over appraisal errors

A key city employee says he was fired earlier this week for daring to disagree with City Manager Steve Stanton.

"The way he communicates with people, everybody is afraid of him," said Patrick Bennett, 58, who was the city's risk manager.

But Stanton says Bennett was fired on Wednesday for downplaying an appraisal that miscalculated the value of city property by 2.5 percent and for questioning whether officials or the public should have access to that information.

NEW RETAIL SPACE IN CITRUS COUNTY: Though they won't be finished in time for this holiday season, two retail centers will open in Citrus in early 2007. One is on State Road 44 just east of the Crystal River city limits. Another retail center, off County Road 486, should open in February. Century Retail is developing the property east of Forest Ridge Boulevard. NEW HOTEL ON SR 54: The first hotel on State Road 54, a Residence Inn by Marriott, began construction last week, according to the developer, the Hogan Group. SR 54 is Pasco County's busiest east-west artery.
