Learn safe, smart use of boats Want to learn how to stay safe on the water, navigate with help from the stars or tie a bowline? Here's your chance. Learn basic boating skills and seamanship by attending the Boat Smart Program sponsored by the Clearwater Sail & Power Squadron from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, from today through Dec. 11 at the Clearwater Sail & Power Squadron Building, 1000 Cleveland St. The course costs $35 for the manual and materials. (Additional students in the same family pay only $20 for an extra homework packet.) Boat ownership is not required. The program covers Florida boating laws, rules, navigation, safety equipment, basic knots, radio use, emergency procedures and general safety. Participants with a grade of 80 percent or higher qualify for a State Boat Operators License and are eligible for lower marine insurance rates. Martial arts show to honor master Come see an exciting martial arts performance by masters and champions of all ages to honor the 25-year career of martial arts master Nick Scrima. Weapon routines, fighting forms, the Lion Dance and more will be featured from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Countryside High School auditorium, 3000 State Road 580. Library to auction baskets of goodies The Largo Public Library has as many as 20 gift baskets full of goodies up for auction. The Holiday Gift Basket Silent Auction runs from Friday through Dec. 14 at the library, 120 Central Park Drive. The baskets will be on display across from the circulation desk. Choose from different themes, such as babies, gardening and tea for two. The highest bidder will be notified by the Friends of the Largo Library. Her work, now centered around her love of Florida's ecosystems and their unique beauty, will be on display throughout December at the Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Drive. Finnerty is active with the World Wildlife Federation, National Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, Florida Wildlife Federation and North American Nature Photography Association.
