  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Plan in place; now we just need toys

Our Toys for Tots goal for the year is to provide a holly, jolly Christmas for a record number of registered children.

Our toy drop boxes are already in place throughout east and central Pasco. For a list of our many convenient drop box locations, visit our Web site, www. toysfortotspasco.org. Again this year, our friends and partners from Pasco Fire Rescue will help collect the donated toys.

On Saturday, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers will pick up new, unwrapped toys set next to your mailbox.

This easy method of collecting toys allows our program to expand each year. We will count on this post office drive and your support to meet our ambitious target of serving 3,500 deserving tots.

Our school counselors will register the needy children in each of our east and central Pasco schools. Children not enrolled in schools will be registered by Premier Community Health Group Inc.

Fine partnerships have developed, and this fantastic arrangement ensures that our program serves the most deserving children in Pasco County. Christmas parties will help to generate a vast supply of additional toys and other necessary items for these tots.

Phillips & Jordan Inc. and Pasco Veterinary Medical will again host parties for our kids.

New this year, on Saturday, the Smokehouse Creek Rodeo Arena will host a Toys for Tots drive.

Our outstanding relationship with local Rotary Clubs and the South Fork RV Park helps ensure that we shall provide new socks, underwear and a new toothbrush to many of the precious children we serve.

On Dec. 15, a swarm of our Pasco volunteers and young folks will assist us to sort our collected toys in all five of our Toys for Tots distribution sites.

Then, on Dec. 16, all of our duly registered families will assemble to receive the toys, food and other necessary items for their precious children.

Zephyrhills Marine Corps League, Detachment 1124, will keep a toy distribution site open the following week for any deserving family that we might have inadvertently missed.

Now, the only thing left is for our caring Pasco County neighbors, friends and volunteers to give from the bottom of their generous hearts.

With our plan in place, I know that our community will, once again, rise up to provide toys and other necessary items for these precious children.

I'm sure that, together, we can again create the magic of Christmas.

Bob Loring, East Pasco Toys for Tots
