Next time you pick up a mango, think of Carl Campbell, who championed the tropical fruit for 50 years. Mr. Campbell, a professor emeritus of the University of Florida's Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead, died Saturday at his home. He was 77. "I would say Carl was instrumental in the development of the international mango industry in this hemisphere," Jonathan Crane, tropical fruit crops specialist at the research center, told the Miami Herald.

Leverock's to set out anchor again

After a brief hiatus from the Tampa Bay restaurant scene, Leverock's is coming back. Owners sold the last Pinellas County location in April to make way for condos, but almost immediately found a new site at a former Ponderosa Steak House, 840 S Pasadena Ave. in South Pasadena. The new place won't be open until January and won't be on the water like the old restaurant, but it will have some familiar decorations and menu items. The Leverock family started the business in Pinellas Park in 1948 and built it to 12 restaurants before selling out in the 1980s. Only one Leverock's remains, in Cape Haze.

Interrupted flow of water dams up cars

Traffic was a mess Monday in Tampa's West Shore business district. Blame a water pipe that burst Wednesday. Repairs are complete, and traffic should be back to normal today. Meanwhile, work continues on a water pipe that burst Thursday under the Hillsborough River near Kennedy Boulevard. The repairs might cause traffic delays, but should be completed today, city officials say.

Time for thousands of house parties

With its self-imposed deadline two days away, the state is poised to reach its goal of 12,000 free home inspections through the My Safe Florida Home program by Thursday's end of hurricane season. The program completed 11,819 inspections in 11 counties as of Monday, including 915 in Pinellas and 1,179 in Hillsborough. Although the initial phase ends Thursday, homeowners still can apply to have an inspection when the program resumes after the New Year by visiting www.mysafeflorida home.com or calling toll-free 1-800-342-2762.
