Grapefruit juice buyers urged to buy some more

Attention, shoppers: If you're a "lapsed" buyer of grapefruit juice, neglecting to make a purchase in the past year or two, Florida growers want you back. The Florida Department of Citrus has signed a $750,000 contract with Catalina Marketing Corp. in St. Petersburg to boost grapefruit juice sales with targeted coupons. If a shopper's supermarket "loyalty card" indicates she bought grapefruit juice in the past, Catalina's system will automatically pop out a $1-off coupon good on their next purchase. People who buy grapefruit juice will be rewarded with a coupon worth $1.50 off their next two purchases. The "go grapefruit" campaign will dole out coupons in 17,000 stores nationwide through June.

Tourism tally: More room for natives

Maybe you've noticed a little more room on the beach, or a slightly shorter wait at your favorite restaurant. The number of tourists in Florida has dropped a bit this year, the state's tourism marketing agency, Visit Florida, reported Monday. Through the end of September, an estimated 66.8-million people visited the Sunshine State, down 0.9 percent from 67.4-million for the same period last year. If the trend continues, this would be the first year since 2001 that tourist numbers fell. Visit Florida officials blame "a lingering hurricane perception" among travelers, says spokeswoman Vanessa Welter. They also point to competition from destinations like Las Vegas with heftier advertising budgets.

Carolina captures corporate plaudits

Can anybody beat North Carolina as a corporate magnet? Not this year. Florida was 11th in Site Selection magazine's business climate rankings, published this month. Carolina's first-place finish was aided by the state's generous incentives, low taxes and trained labor. Texas, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama also topped Florida.
