Man accused of torching 3 cats

TAMPA - The cat cries from 8410 N Orangeview Ave. were so loud Monday night that a neighbor called police.

Richard Aaron Wyatt, 30, was behind bars Tuesday, accused by of pouring gasoline on cats, then torching them and drowning them.

Tampa police said he enticed three cats to his house with food. Then, investigators said, he burned them with gas and a propane torch before dunking them in a container of water and placing them into black garbage bags ready for trash pickup.

Wyatt's older brother, Army Capt. Larry Wyatt, 39, said he couldn't defend his sibling's actions.

"He messed up," Larry Wyatt said as his brother sat in the Orient Road Jail on $6,000 bail. "He's feeling it now."

But he said the stray cat problem in the Temple Crest neighborhood, south of Busch Boulevard, had been ongoing.

"Cat fights in the yard, cats walking over vehicles, paw prints on their cars," Larry Wyatt said, detailing some of the complaints by Richard Wyatt and his live-in girlfriend.

Animal Services spokeswoman Marti Ryan said the agency had made contact with Richard Wyatt at least twice in January, when he received their assistance in trapping nuisance cats legally: by containing them, then calling Animal Services.

"He was aware of that procedure, but (this time), he took the law into his own hands," Ryan said.

At least one of the cat carcasses was that of Skeeter, an 8-month-old cared for by one of the neighbors, Ryan said. Investigators were still trying to determine if the others were pets too.

Larry Wyatt said he didn't know exactly where his brother's rage came from but suggested that Richard Wyatt was tired when he came home and became exasperated with the strays.

"That's not the way to handle it," Larry Wyatt said. "But every man handles his actions a different way."

A former Air Force rigger, Richard Wyatt most recently sold air conditioners for Florida Cooling Supplies Inc., an arrest report said. Larry Wyatt said his brother lost the job after news of his arrest broke Tuesday.

Police were also investigating Richard Wyatt as a suspect in another incident. Tampa police spokesman Larry McKinnon said neighbors told officers that they saw Wyatt fire a pellet gun at a police helicopter during a flyover.

When Larry Wyatt escorted his brother's girlfriend home Tuesday night, an angry neighbor confronted him about his cat, Skeeter.

"I'm sorry about your pets," Larry Wyatt said. "That's sad."

"It's sick," the neighbor responded.

"Well," Wyatt said, "he's reaping what he sowed now."

Times researcher Cathy Wos contributed to this report.

Has the city corrected the cat problem yet?
by Colter 12/17/06 09:41 PM
It is a cat people. A CAT. The only thing with less intelligence than a cat is people who think their cat's life is more important than a human's.

I am sickened by what this man did to those poor cats. I am equally sickened by people who say he should be set on fire himself. Anyone who wishes such harm is also a sick person.

It's a sick so-and-so that tortures innocent animals. Animal cruelty is cruelty of the worst kind. Individuals with this kind of nature are more likely to treat their fellow man the same way.
by Gail 12/04/06 12:45 PM
The very same should be done to this sick person.

sick person. I really cannot comprehend what gets in some people's minds. If they even have minds. Obvioustly don't have much in the way of a conscience. May he get punished for eternity, and the poor kittens, well, enjoy your time in Heaven, babies.

It seems to me that it is time for you people in Florida to tend to your animals. Keep your cats in the house for their own safety, plus spaying and neutering would keep the population down. Your vets in the area should take part in helping.

It doesn't matter how bad the stray cat problem is, what he did to those cats is horrible.
by Martha 11/30/06 09:26 PM
How could someone do that to cute little cats. I can not beleive someone would do that.Im not saying that because I have 12 pets
by Belinda 11/30/06 03:03 PM
Hopefully people will learn from this and KEEP THEIR PETS INSIDE

I agree with Dale. The penalties for animal cruelty like that should be much much much stronger. There are animal cruely incidents in this area almost daily and something should be done about it. Accomplises should pay too.

This person should be punished to the full extent of the law.I also think that people that let there animals roam free and damage other peoples property should be fined and there pets taken away.I am not defending this person .

With all of the other charges, including firing at a police helicopter, how long will this satanic being be removed from the likes of us and our children? BTW, 5 years in prison being traded for cigarettes is a lifetime. Will he get 5 years?
by paul 11/29/06 03:55 PM
the sad thing is cruelty to animals is only punishable by 5 years. the legislature needs to up the ante for cases like this. why should someone capable of something like this only face the same penalty as someone with a gram of crack in their pocket?
by Christina 11/29/06 12:32 PM
It's sickens me to think a person could harm any animal! Much less burn them alive and throw them out like trash. Wyatt deserves the heaviest sentence the law can give for animal crulty!! Wyatt should set hiself on fire and see if he likes it.
by Karen 11/29/06 12:23 PM
"he's reaping what he sowed now." NO, I DON'T THINK SO.....he should nor even be out on bail - he purposefully commited an unpeakable act and he should pay for it. He should spend at least a year in prioson plus a hefty fine and community work.
by Lauren 11/29/06 11:20 AM
It is a proven fact that people who torture and mutilate animals in this fashion are highly likely to hurt or even kill another human being. This is not a situation that should be taken lightly, and this poor excuse for a human should pay for this.
by Michael 11/29/06 10:19 AM
I hope this "man" is convicted to the full extent of the law, this is obviously only a glimpse of his darker side, next it will be a child. However, this is exactly why I don't let my cats outside. It's a safer world for them indoors.
by Don 11/29/06 09:28 AM
You know, we use the death penalty when people are murdered. This guy deserves it for what he did to these innocent animals.
by Dale 11/29/06 08:14 AM
Someone needs to pour gasoline on Mr. Richard Wyatt and light him on fire. The world does not need people like this and should be executed.
