Star's early return sparks UGA

ATHENS, Ga. - Tasha Humphrey was back in her element: on the court for eighth-ranked Georgia and in the interview room with the press.

"It was good to see you guys again," Humphrey laughed as she exited the postgame appearance.

Humphrey scored 11 in the second half after her surprise return to the lineup, and freshman Ashley Houts had a record 10 steals and 16 points as Georgia (6-0) routed Memphis 95-46 Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs' leading scorer the past two seasons, Humphrey had been serving a six-game suspension for her offseason arrest for underage possession of alcohol. Coach Andy Landers shortened it by half a game.

"She made a mistake," Landers said. "But the way she has handled the consequences has been very good."

NO. 1 MARYLAND 68, MARSHALL 49: Crystal Langhorne scored 11 of her 15 in the second half for the visiting Terrapins (8-0), off to their best start since the 1991-92 team opened 9-0.

NO. 3 OKLAHOMA 79, LAMAR 44: Courtney Paris had 21 points and 18 rebounds as the Sooners (5-0) won their 19th straight regular-season game.

NO. 5 DUKE 89, ODU 40: Abby Waner scored 16 for the host Blue Devils (6-0), who had their best shooting night of the season (36-for-61, 59 percent).

NO. 15 STANFORD 88, SANTA CLARA 56: Kristen Newlin had 12 points and 16 rebounds, and the host Cardinal (3-3) bounced back from consecutive losses.

NO. 17 DEPAUL 71, WIS.-G.B 70: Caprice Smith's runner in the lane with .4 seconds left saved the visiting Blue Demons (4-1).

NO. 20 MICH. ST. 67, R.I. 40: Allyssa DeHaan, a 6-foot-9 freshman, scored a career-high 28 and had 10 rebounds and five blocks for the host Spartans (5-1).

NO. 21 GW 73, VILLANOVA 47: Jessica Adair had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the host Colonials (6-1), who pulled away with a 12-0 run early in the second half.

NO. 23 BYU 66, HARVARD 51: Dani Wright scored 14 for the visiting Cougars (4-2), who forced 28 turnovers.

NO. 24 KENTUCKY 79, DETROIT 44: Sarah Elliott scored 22, and the host Wildcats (4-2) opened the second half with a 35-6 run.

NO. 25 TEXAS TECH 77, TULANE 50: Jordan Murphree scored 14 for the host Raiders (6-1).

Notable: USF closes a seven-game homestand before visiting No. 18 Michigan State on Sunday. ... FIU has played tough teams close on the road, losing by 10 at Iowa and 5 at Tulane. ... The Panthers are led by 5-foot-8 guard LaQuetta Ferguson (17 ppg) and 6-3 Latvian center Lasma Jekabsone (13 ppg, 11.2 rpg). ... The Bulls have won all six by at least 25. A sweep this weekend could give them their first ranking.
