Robert Michael Gates was a commissioned officer in the Air Force from 1966 to 1968, serving as an intelligence officer minding Minuteman nuclear missiles at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. He also was director of the CIA from 1991 to 1993 under President George H.W. Bush.
