  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Dade City man, 35, accused of rape

He said he didn't have sex with the woman. But she told authorities it was rape. About 6 p.m. Nov. 6, Juan Luis "Migo" Jasso-Quinones, 35, of 18300 Bruce Road, Dade City, came uninvited to the woman's home in Lacoochee, a sheriff's report said. He said he wanted to have sex, and when she said no, he pushed her down on the bed, took off her clothes and raped her, the report said. Jasso-Quinones was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with involuntary sexual battery. He was held at the Land O'Lakes jail Thursday in lieu of $50,000 bail. Authorities withheld the woman's name because of the nature of the charges.

Trash service cut for 20,000

Waste Management is stopping trash service for almost 20,000 customers beginning Jan. 1, a spokeswoman said Thursday. The company will limit its service to the densely populated area west of the Suncoast Parkway and south of State Road 52. In letters to customers, Waste Management said the change will allow it to work more efficiently by structuring routes better. Dropped customers can set up service with one of the other 11 approved haulers in Pasco. The move leaves Waste Management's office north of SR 52 outside of its service territory, but since the trucks are located there, spokeswoman Lynn Brown said, the company will still haul its own trash away.

Stolen TVs won't stop restaurant's opening

Construction is running ahead of schedule. Chicken wing appetites are simmering. Beef O'Brady's, the first chain restaurant to locate downtown, is rolling toward a Dec. 9 opening. But 10 televisions worth $12,000 have been stolen. The plasma and LCD sets vanished shortly after they were delivered from Best Buy to the new restaurant at Seventh Street and Pasco Avenue on Friday, police said. Only contractors and laborers have access to the building. Todd Batchelor, owner of the much-anticipated franchise, said he won't let the theft delay him. He'll still open with 28 screens displayed throughout the restaurant. For now, he said, he's planning to replace the stolen TVs. But Batchelor is confident they'll turn up.

"You don't just do something like that and not talk about it," he said.

Man killed trying to cross darkened road

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, as the night deepened, Michelle Vasquez heard trucks speeding down the road outside her home near 16th Street and Otis Allen Road. "I heard a loud bang," she said. "I thought they hit a mailbox. I ran to the window and looked." Vasquez saw a man lying there, dead. He had been trying to cross the road. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper would not release the names of those involved in the crash. Witnesses said it appeared to have been caused by two pickup trucks racing side-by-side on a two-lane road.
