Rays say it's just a timeshare, not a relocation bid
Team looks to expand market with three games in Orlando.
By GARY SHELTON
Published December 1, 2006
Three games, the man said. Just three games.
After all, a team needs new fans. Especially when the attendance is down, the payroll is down and the winning percentage is down.
So why not broaden the horizons?
Why not play a few games in Orlando?
Why not take your season and sell off a few spare parts?
Sigh. It was troubling 17 years ago when it was Hugh Culverhouse talking about a dalliance with Orlando and, yeah, it's a little unsettling to hear Stu Sternberg singing the same lyrics.
For one thing, most of us expected more of Sternberg than to see him follow Culverhouse's business model, and it would be nice if someone would rip it from his hands before he hires Richard Williamson, loses Doug Williams and alienates Bo Jackson.
For another, isn't it bad form when an owner flirts with another while he's still in his honeymoon period?
"This is purely about us expanding our market," Sternberg said Thursday. "This idea of us leaving town ... it's not even an issue."
Agreed, moving three games of an 81-game home season isn't the same as moving three out of eight, as the Bucs were prepared to do. Losing a Rangers series is going to affect about 25,000 fans, even if one of the lost games includes a nifty giveaway such as B.J. Upton Bobbleglove Day.
"I can understand people feeling queasy if we were talking about playing 30 games, but we're not." Sternberg said. "But the last thing I would want to hear is: 'Good riddance. Tell them to get the hell out of here.' If people are concerned, it's because they care."
Also, it's because no one understands the way the relocation game works quite like baseball fans in Tampa Bay. We have winked at our share of owners. We've built new stadiums in Chicago, in Seattle, in San Francisco. Frank Lloyd Wright didn't get as many buildings built as we have.
In other words, there is a little paranoia to being a Tampa Bay sports fan. And for those who have supported the Rays, bless their scarred little hearts, this is not a comfortable notion.
Three games in Orlando against Texas? Who is to say that in the following year, it doesn't become six games? Or 10, including a series against the Yankees? What about a series in Jacksonville? What about one in Miami in 2010 (by then, the Portland Marlins won't mind).
And what about the inevitable day when an Orlando city commissioner says: "Lease or no lease, why don't we build a stadium and get the Rays permanently? Maybe we can change their name to the Devil Rays of the Caribbean."
Knowing what savvy businessmen you and I are, at this point we would stroke our chins and say: "Well, you know, we want to stay in Tampa Bay. But we sure could use a new stadium."
And, gee, wouldn't that be fun?
For the record, I believe Sternberg when he says he has no ulterior motives. He wants more fans. He wants more than the 20-25 games a year that are televised into the Orlando market.
And, yeah, it would be good to see a few more fannies in a few more seats, which might lead to a few more dollars to spend on a few more players. Orlando Cabrera, maybe. Orlando Hernandez. Orlando Hudson. Maybe Orlando Cepeda can be the hitting coach. Tony Orlando and Dawn can sing the anthem.
Still, opening this door can set a lot of things in motion beyond good intentions. Yes, the Rays are kids, but no one wants to share custody. It's the reason Shamu doesn't have a place in Tampa Bay.
To be fair, Orlando could chase a team - maybe this isn't a plot to steal the Rays, maybe it's a plot to steal the Rangers - without those three days in May. For instance, cities have been pursuing the Marlins without ever seeing them up close. In the case of the Marlins, perhaps that's why.
As far as a new stadium, Sternberg repeats himself, "I will never demand a new stadium."
Still, it is hard to get away from the uneasy feeling that something is being lost here, something compromised. Do fewer games mean less faith in the market? After all, the Yankees don't play games in Newark. The Braves don't play in Chattanooga. The Rockies don't play in Boulder.
Besides, when it comes to the play of the Rays, shouldn't we be more concerned with "how" than "where"?
As long as we are channeling Culverhouse, remember that the reason he flirted with Orlando was that he wasn't convinced he could draw fans here even if his team was good.
Guess what? For a while there, the Bucs were pretty good, and the fans came. Guess what? Some of them came from Orlando.
So save the bus fare, Stu. In baseball, the key to the game is getting home. Sometimes, it's staying there.

Your thoughts? Rays in Orlando
The Devil Rays are looking into the idea of playing a three-game series in the Disney/Orlando area next season. Is it a good idea? Do you have a problem with it? Are you worried this means the Rays are thinking of moving? Tell us what you think. Send your comments 100 words or less along with your name and hometown to sptsnews@sptimes.com.

Move the Rays to another Florida city.
This is only one of a hundred things MLB could do to improve itself.

Play your games there. Move the team there. It can't be any worse than what is happening now.

It's being billed as a marketing move but, as a Rays fan from pre-Day One, my first reaction was: Are they testing the Orlando market with an eye towards moving the team? I hope that is merely paranoia on my part. St. Pete is their rightful home!

The Trop is a dump and is difficult for those of us that live east of Tampa. I would like to see a stadium with a retractable top built by the fairgrounds. Then you could draw the Orlando crowd.
Also, spending $$ for a team would be nice .....

The Devil Rays need to reach out to as many fans as they possible can and playing 3 games in Orlando is a good idea. To me going to Orlando is high reward and no risk at all. If they hit some fans there then it was well worth it!! No rain please!!!!

The Trop is a depressing building. Put some paint on top of all of the gray. Better yet, remove the roof. Get rid of the green uni's. Get cable contracts so people in North Florida and SW Florida can watch the team. Field a Big league, not AAA team.

If Orlando will Pay 3.7% of D-Rays annual lease payment at the Trop and 3.7% of salaries Tropacana field employees, venders, security, parking. and all others who will lose income. Also taxpayers who paid for the stadium. Don't forget season ticket h

My family & I had the pleasure of attending a D-Rays game in August of this year while on vacation and had a great time. It would be a great loss to the Tampa-St. Petersburg area to lose even one game to Orlando.

Bring 'em on! I can't wait to see a pro game in Orlando and won't have to drive even a second on I-4 to get to it.

God Bless Sternberg. Sternberg is smart trying to force Brighthouse Networks in Orlando - the ONLY MSA not to carry the Rays in the entire state - to carry the Rays games.
Sternberg wants his brand in front of Orlando baseball enthusiasts. Smart.

It's funny Stu wants to play three games in Orlando. Devil Rays had a AA team in Orlando from 1999-2003. The result of that experience was poor attendance and the team moving on to Montgomery. Stu, not cared then and nobody cares now in Orlando.

St Pete is not a good location for the D-Ray. I live in Orlando and I would like to see the D-Rays relocate to Tampa or even Osceola county area where Royals used to spring train. Nice central location that would attract fans from all over Cent. FL.

No one buys a team to lose money. Being in St. Pete disenfranchised Tampa fans, but the area had more than enough years to support the team. They started coming when big names were on the roster, but no one anywhere will support a team of cheap kids.

While I would surely attend one or two of the games here, I would much prefer to see the broadcast guys get a deal done for more local TV coverage. Then partner with tour operators to get Orlando folks to the Trop for some fun...

It's ONLY 3 games!!! The Rays need to expand their market better in all of Central Florida.Only the people with Adelphia(soon to become Comcast)cable can pick up Rays games on FSN. Brighthouse does't carry FSN..which is insane!!

Just tick us off even more. You want to change the name, and now move us for a few games. Think about your loyal fans with a wardrobe of TAMPA BAY shirts, hats, etc. Change isn't always good ya know! Spend the money on the players & stay in Tampa!

Who came up with this bogus idea!! Try bringing in fans in the surrounding 6 miles instead of moving 3 game to Orlando. What are you doing for your season ticket holders for those 3 games? Why tick off the people who have supported the rays?

Ownership should commit to placing more quality players on the field to make this team a draw for this community before taking a lesser product to Orlando. It's long past time to sign a few choice free agents - even if the market is down.

I flip flop on the thought of the D-Rays playing in Orlando. I think 1. It's a good move for the suits. 2. I feel it's a good move for the Orlando area.
I think it's a lousy move for those of us who bleed D-Ray Green. I think the fans will come.

The Rays got on TV in Charlotte County this past July after 9 seasons. FSN only got shown in Sarasota since July also. Put a competing team on the field and the fans will come. Go to Orlando to play in front 10,000? Isn't that the Trop, with bugs?

My general thought is that the Rays should focus on building a winning team. That, and that alone, will put fans in seats.
Being a partial season ticket holder contemplating a full season package, I'd be concerned if there'd be a price reduction.
